JU organises Gender Sensitization Workshop

JAMMU: The Centre for Women's Studies, in collaboration with Department of Geology, University of Jammu organized 2nd workshop under ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Geology on Friday, 15th, September 2023.

Prof. Sarika Manhas, Faculty, Department of Home Science, University of Jammu was the resource person.

The workshop was planned under the able guidance and vision of Prof. Anju Bhasin Head, Department of Geology and Prof. Vishav Raksha Director, Centre for Women's Studies.

The workshop began with the welcome address by Prof. S. K. Pandita, Faculty from Department of Geology who in his address emphasized on the importance of such workshops and appreciated the efforts of the Centre to conduct the same for their students and scholars as well.

Further he also acknowledged that such types of workshops are much required especially for the students of Science Departments.

Further Prof.Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women's Studies formally welcomed all the participants and explained the motive behind the conduct of such workshops.

She said that we all should acknowledge the differences that exist in the society, and we have to understand the fact that the opportunity for all can be the same but how it is given to different genders is important.

She also explained that through such workshops we are trying to inculcate the gender sensitivity among the students as they are the flag bearers of change in the society.

Prof. Sarika Manhas, the key resource person for the workshop, spoke about the relevance of Gender sensitization workshops especially for the students and scholars and said that this lecture can be a helpful tool in creating sensitive and inclusive society.

She gave insights on the concept of Sex vs. Gender, Masculinity and Femininity and explained how gender is a socially and culturally constructed.

Further she elaborated the concept of Gender Roles, Gender Stereotypes, Gender Typing and various causes of Gender Discrimination and Inequality in the society.

While interacting with the participants she also suggested the various ways through which we can overcome the Gender discrimination in the society.

Faculty members, Research Scholars and Students of Department of Geology very actively participated in the workshop and shared their personal experiences and raised many queries on the issues like Gender roles, Stereotyping, Safety concerns of the women, patriarchy in the family and inter-generational gaps and societal expectations as women and men.

The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo both Faculty, Centre for Women's Studies.

The office staff of the Geology looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
