JU organises session on intellectual property rights

JAMMU: A brain storming session on intellectual property rights was organized to execute and carry forward the IPR related activities of University of Jammu.

The session was held in the office of Dean Life Sciences, Prof. Seema Langer, under the convener ship of Prof. B.K. Bajaj. Entire team of IPR was present and session started with a welcome note by the convener IPR.

In his address, Prof Bajaj stated that we need to promote the culture of filing the patents along with inventing, creating and developing new innovations in different areas of academia.

He told that we need to open our minds and look for patentable inventions from the pile of our knowledge and data.

Also he stressed that before publishing our research, we must get our data checked for its patentability. Prof Seema Langer, Dean Life sciences made the house aware that the University of Jammu is highly diverse with respect to academic disciplines and has excellent potent for creating innovations in various fields.

She emphasized that scholars and faculty members across the university departments should be motivated for filing the patents arising out of their own research.

Prof Langer also stressed that we can start from filing the Indian patents before trying patents in other countries.

She also laid stress on other aspects like financing of the innovators, facilitation and appropriate terms and conditions related to patents. Prof. Kamal Kapoor, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Jammu and an IPR expert emphasized that before filing the patent, the commercial aspects and appropriateness for patentability must be ascertained.

He informed the team that filing India patents is less expensive and the potential innovators must be encouraged to file Indian patents. Prof Satyapaul encouraged the team to motivate the fellow colleagues to indulge and identify inventions that have the potential for patentability.

Prof. Sanjay Gupta from Dept of Law and an expert in IPR addressed the team about various legalities and laws related to filling of patents.

He talked about Indian patent laws and laws governing the patents in other countries like US, Europe etc. Dr. Nisha Kapoor and Dr. Yashpal Khajuria, School of Biotechnology made the team aware of the various innovations that are patentable in various areas of Biology. Dr. Sandeep Arya from Department of Physics talked about various patentable inventions from Physical sciences.

One of the team members Dr. Mandeep Singh from Directorate of Sports, University of Jammu shared his experiences about filing patents at Indian and US patent offices.

The session was concluded with an unanimous resolution that such brain storming sessions can be a good source of unidentified inventions, ideas and deliberations to foster the culture of innovations and patent filing.
