GCET Jammu celebrates World Environment Day in the campus

JAMMU: The NSS unit of Govt. College of Engineering & Technology, Jammu today on 5th of June organized a series of events in order to celebrate "World Environment Day" under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav.

The events were held under the patronage of college Principal Prof. (Dr.) Sameru Sharma. In her address, she said that World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to create awareness and to encourage efforts to protect the environment.

World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. She exhorted the students that this year the theme pertains to solutions to the plastic pollution and urged them to say No to plastics.

The event was started with the poster making by the students on the theme Beat the Plastic Pollution in which scores of students presented their ideas and made the posters. In the second event a lecture on the theme was delivered by Altaf Ahmad who is working as Assistant Professor in Environment Sciences at GCET Jammu.

In his talk he briefed about the importance of celebrating World Environment Day. He also stressed upon to minimize the use of plastics and aware the students to actively participate in the campaign.

The event was organized by NSS volunteers Gazanfar Kazmi, Rakshant Balotra and Sunidhi Sharma, Harshdeep, Divyansh under the guidance of NSS Programme Officer Dr. Raman Gupta. He also pledged with all participants to join hands to eradicate the plastic pollution and contribute towards the campaign of restoration and conservation of the ecosystem.

The staff members who were present during the event included Prof. Shammi Kumar, Dr. Heera Saini, Dr. Rajinder Singh, Dr. Neerupma, Balbir Singh and Er. Atit Sharma and Sudershan Kumar.
