‘Create Block Print Patterns' contest launched in Samba to revive calico printing designs

SAMBA: Deputy Commissioner Samba, Abhishek Sharma today launched the ‘Create Block Print Patterns' contest for reviving the designs used for calico printing in Samba on jk.mygov.in portal here on Thursday.
This contest is available on the web portal that could be accessed by logging in to www.jk.mygov.in and going to the active link of the competition there from.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC Samba called this initiative a way of celebrating and revival of this indigenous craft of the District.
He in his message urged all residents of J&K, especially the students and artists to participate in this contest to gain and spread knowledge about the unique cultural heritage and local flora and fauna depicting rich diversity, with special reference to District Samba.
The main objective of holding this contest is that the local artisans practicing calico printing can have a dictionary of prints that have historical and cultural importance and are in great market demand.
The designs so obtained from this contest will be utilised by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu for developing the wooden blocks used in block printing.
AD Handicrafts Samba, Ms. Niharika briefed the gathering about the art of calico printing. District Samba - traditionally known as the Sheeton Ka Shehar, was famous for its calico printing, mostly on handwoven cotton sheets, in soothing natural colours using wooden blocks. Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom Jammu in collaboration with District Administration Samba is trying to revive this languishing art by bringing the youngsters and traditional artisans together to contemporarise the heritage art.
The entry should be original and should not have been previously published in any print or digital media without any copyrighted or trademarked images and logos and need to be submitted on jk.mygov.in portal till June 10, 2023.
Also present on the occasion was ADDC, Samba Rajinder Singh along with all the district officers.
