DLSA, Sheikh-ul-Alam Memorial Degree College Budgam organise Legal Awareness programme

BUDGAM: On ‘World Anti-Tobacco Day', the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Budgam, in collaboration with Government Sheikh-ul-Alam Memorial Degree College Budgam today organised a legal awareness event within the campus premises, here.

The programme was aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and ignite a collective commitment towards building a healthier and tobacco free society, and brought together legal experts, faculty members, educators, and students to highlight the dangers of tobacco use.

The Chairman DLSA and (PDJ) Budgam, Khalil Ahmad Choudhary, was chief guest on the occasion. He has consistently championed the cause of "Justice for All".

Chairman DLSA Budgam in his presidential address stressed that we must pledge to empower our society, especially our youth, with the knowledge and awareness required to resist the temptations of tobacco.

The Government Degree College Budgam and educational institutions across the district play a crucial role in shaping the minds and lives of our young generation, he said, adding that it is imperative that we instill in them the understanding of the harms associated with tobacco use and equip them with the necessary skills to make informed choices.

The Chairman emphasised that we must address the tobacco industry's marketing tactics that target vulnerable populations, including young people and marginalized communities. The promotion of tobacco products must be curbed through strict regulations and effective enforcement, ensuring that our youth are shielded from deceptive advertising campaigns.

He also stressed on the point that we must pledge to empower our society, especially our youth, with the knowledge and awareness required to resist the influence of tobacco.

The Chairman also urged the general public to strive for a society free from the harmful effects of tobacco. Let us inspire change, empower our youth, and work towards building a healthier and brighter future for generations to come.

Earlier, the awareness program commenced with an insightful address by resource persons of DLSA, Budgam faculty members of Government Degree College, Budgam and students, who emphasized on multifaceted aspects of tobacco consumption. The event also witnessed informative presentations highlighting the detrimental effects of tobacco on individual health, family wellbeing, and the larger society.

During the interactive session, participants held thought provoking discussions on the addictive nature of tobacco, its adverse health outcomes, and the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle choices.

The Legal experts of DLSA Budgam threw light on the legal aspects related to tobacco control and educated participants about their rights and responsibilities in maintaining a tobacco-free environment.

Principal of the Government Sheikh-ul-Alam Memorial Degree College Budgam, Prof. Dr. Mudasir Afshan stated that this collaborative initiative presented an opportunity to create a lasting impact on the lives of the students and the community at large.

By joining forces, DLSA Budgam and Government Sheikh-ul-Alam Memorial Degree College Budgam aim to instill a sense of responsibility and empower individuals to actively contribute to a healthier and tobacco-free society, he added.

The event concluded with the vote of thanks presented by the Sub Judge/Secretary DLSA Budgam Jahangir Ahmad Bakshi.
