JU celebrates International Museum Day

JAMMU: Centre for Studies in Museology and Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani Museum of Heritage, University of Jammu celebrated International Museum Day on 18 May 2023.

The theme of the function was chosen to align with the International Council of Museums' theme for the year 2023 "Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing".

An interactive program between the four university museums (Herbarium, Zoological Museum, Wadia Museum, and Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani Museum of Heritage) was organized, where the resource persons from respective museums came and interacted with the participants through PowerPoint presentations.

They emphasized the role of university museums- exploring the sustainability of museums in the present scenario, and the different museum techniques used by them.

They further elaborated on the role of their respectivemuseums for the well-being of the students.

Chief Guest Prof. Rajnikant, Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu, inaugurated the exhibition highlighting the cultural and natural heritage of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh.

The Chief Guest was welcomed by Prof. Alka Sharma, In-charge Director, Centre for Studies in Museology, and Dr. Malay Dey, Assistant Professor, Centre for Studies in Museology, University of Jammu. Prof. Rajnikant mentioned the importance of museums in keeping the fading heritage alive and handing it over to the next generation. He further called museums a ‘Sacred' entity.

He reiterated that it is of utmost importance to preserve our heritage including our local language by conversing with our younger generations in the said language.

While highlighting the role of heritage, he added that it plays a crucial role in the physical as well as the mental wellbeing of people.He congratulated the Centre for organizing the program.

The program was also graced by the presence of Prof. Veenu Kaul, HOD, Department of Botany, University of Jammu; faculty members, scholars, and students from various departments of the University.

The event of International Museum Day was organized by the efforts of the scholars of the Centre specially Dorjey, Mamta, Monica, Bijaya, and other students of the PG Diploma in Museology and Conservation.

The students and scholars of various departments also enjoyed the exhibition on the heritage of Jammu Kashmir, and Ladakh
