If you have seen the 1965 American musical drama 'Sound of Music' by Robert Wise, then you must be aware of the classic musical of the same name that inspired the cult movie. After a long wait, 'The Sound of Music' with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II has arrived in India for the first time.
The Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre is presenting 'The Sound of Music', undoubtedly one of the most successful and adored Broadway musicals of all time at its 2000-seater Grand Theatre.
The five-time Tony Award winning musical is the first international Broadway to ever play in India, and what better venue to watch it than the NMACC at BKC, Mumbai's Jio World Convention Centre which will take you to 1930s in Austria.
"We are delighted to present ‘The Sound of Music' as the first ever international Broadway musical in India, at the Cultural Centre!" said Nita M Ambani, the founder and chairperson of NMACC, on Tuesday as she attended the premiere event.
With scenic backgrounds, live orchestra performing, the classic musical, 'The Sound of Music', will portray the triumph of the human spirit through music, happiness and romance.
""The Sound of Music is a timeless musical and it brings so much joy to whoever watches it. Not only the children enjoyed it, but we as parents also enjoyed it. It was so enthralling. So I think this is going to be an enjoyable musical for the people of Mumbai and India to come and watch with their families," Ambani said at the musical's premiere in Mumbai
The original Broadway production, which opened in 1959, starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. Since then, the show has gone through many productions and revivals. Set in Austria in 1938, 'The Sound of Music', tells the story of Maria, who takes a new job as a governess to look after a large family of widowed naval captains with seven children as she brings a new found meaning of life and music into their home.
Several songs from the classic musical went on to become standards, including 'Do-Re-Me', 'Clime Ev'ry Mountain' and the title song, 'The Sound of Music'.
