Snow avalanche buries 5 vehicles, 6 persons rescued at Zojila Pass

KARGIL: At least six persons had a miraculous escape when a huge snow avalanche occurred at Zojjila Pass on Srinagar Ladakh highway on Sunday, official sources said.

They said that at least five vehicles including four trucks and a private vehicle came under a snow avalanche near Shitani Nallah on Zojila Pass on the Ladakh highway. However, all the passengers and drivers of these vehicles escaped safely.

However, they received minor injuries and were referred to a Hospital for treatment, they said.

Police said all the six drivers and passengers on board were rescued by the men of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Local Police.

The incident occurred at a time when Zojila pass was experiencing light snowfall.

Meanwhile, BRO has pressed its men and machinery to clear the road of snow avalanche to make it traffic worthy.

The Srinagar Leh Highway was put through for vehicular traffic on March 16 this year following BRO, responsible for the maintenance of the strategic highway, worked hard to clear the heavy amount of snow from Sonamarg towards Zojila Pass on the Srinagar side and from Drass towards Zojila on the Kargil side.
