LG Manoj Sinha to inaugurate Chancellor's Trophy at JU

Nearly 550 athletes to participate

JAMMU: Around 550 athletes in different disciplines to take part in three days Chancellor's Trophy to be inaugurated by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday at University of Jammu.

"We are hosting a three-day Chancellor's Trophy from tomorrow to be inaugurated by LG Manoj Sinha, who is also Chancellor of the institution" Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu here told reporters at a press conference.

He said that sports inculcate discipline and develop mental health, adding, "idea behind hosting this event is to unite youth and that is the reason, the event has been named as 'Sauhard' means brotherhood."

The Vice Chancellor was flanked by Registrar, Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Director, Directorate of Distance and Open Learning, Director, DIQA, Prof Meenakshi Kilam, Ranjeet Kalra, Teaching Faculty, HRDC, Dr Daud Iqbal, Director, Directorate of Physical Education, Vinay Thusoo, Official Spokesperson and Dr Imran Farooq, Nodal Officer, Amritkaal Initiatives.

Sharing the details of the event, Dr Iqbal said that six disciplines are to be hosted during the competition in which around 550 athletes from eight Universities are expected to take part.

Dr Iqbal further said that it is for the first time in decades, the students from Directorate of Online Learning will also be participating.

"They always remained deprived from participating in these competitions despite the fact that they are highly talented," said the Director.

Meanwhile the Vice Chancellor further stated that sports and culture are included in the curriculum of the Jammu University academics for which various initiatives are being taken by the institution.

He however, added that exclusive 'Sports Policy' of Jammu University is also in the pipeline and will soon be in public domain, adding Prof Rai said, "a special thrust is being laid on sports infrastructure and facilities. Rs 40 crore sports complex is also coming up at Kathua Campus of Jammu University while Rs 5 crore is also sanctioned in the CAPEX budget for augmenting sports structure."

Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Director, Directorate of Distance and Online Education (DD & OE) expressing gratitude to the institution stated that it is indeed a welcome decision that the aspirants of Distance Education will also be taking part in such a prestigious event for the first time.

"It is appreciable on part of the Jammu University authorities that they decided to included students to showcase their talent in the field of sports," said Prof Rohmetra.

However, the Vice Chancellor also disclosed that engagement of corporate sector in the sports sector is also under consideration through various mefiums in future to encourage youth and nurture talent.

An official dress code (jersy) for the event was also launched on the occasion.

Thusoo earlier presented welcome address whereas Ranjeet Kalra presented vote of thanks with highlights of the event.
