Two day Seminar on ‘India's Pathways to Next Economic Powerhouse by 2047' begins at JU

JAMMU: A two-day seminar on ‘India's Pathways to Next Economic Powerhouse by 2047' organized by the Department of Economics sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi begins today at University of Jammu.

In the inaugural function, Prof. Naresh Padha, the Dean Academic Affairs was the Chief Guest.

The Key Note Speakers of the inaugural function were Prof. (Dr.) Charan Singh, Chief Executive, EGROW Foundation; Non-Executive Chairman, Punjab & Sind Bank; Former Professor, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore; Former Director, Department of Economic Policy, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Former Senior Economist, International Monetary Fund (IMF); Prof. (Dr.) Aparna Negi, Professor, Department of Economics, H. P. University, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh; Prof. Vikram Chadha, Former Professor, Punjab School of Economics, GND University, Amritsar, Punjab.

Prof. Charan Singh emphasized that India has to reap the demographic dividend, promote trade and develop infrastructure to achieve the target of becoming the next economic powerhouse by 2047.

India has to compete the United States, European countries and China by pursuing the policies of LOOK East and integrating with Central Asia and to explore the possibility of United States of South Asia and or the possibility of a Common Currency Area of South Asia using Indian Rupees with India as a pivot economy to reach the goal of global economic powerhouse by 2047.

Prof. Aparna Negi advocated for entrepreneurship and skill development through New Education Policy for increasing productivity, achieving carbon neutrality, green growth and sustainability by 2047.

Prof. Vikran Chadha argued that hosting of G20 offers an opportunity to showcase India's potential to become a global economic powerhouse by 2047.

India's approach to a self-reliant economy to integrate with global economies and improved technological capabilities in new technologies in the digital economy, innovation, start-ups, vast pool of talents and strong knowledge economy can pave the sustainable path to achieve the goal of economic superpower by 2047.

The seminar coordinator Prof. Jasbir Singh and Prof. Falendra Kumar Sudan briefed about the seminar and its goals, while Dr. Shallu Sehgal presented the welcome remarks and Prof. Aroon Sharma, Head of the Department presented the vote of thanks.

In the subsequent six technical sessions of the seminar, a total of thirty six well researched papers on diverse topics such future role of Higher Education, CGE Modelling in Policy Making, External Sector, Poverty and Unemployment Reduction, Development of Irrigation, Finances of Urban Local Bodies, Urban Governance, Bio-diverse Organic Farming, Immigration and Remittances, Crafts, Maternal and Child Healthcare, GVCs, Education and Human Capital Development, Demographic Dividend, Ageing Population, ICT, Food Grain Production, Marginalised Section, Public-Private Partnership and Public Financial Markets, Diarrhoea Management, Livelihood and Employment Security, Land, Ecology And Urbanization, Educational Issues of Disadvantaged, Vocational Education, Renewable Energy, Textile Sector, Female Domestic Workers, Trade Performance, Railways, Foreign Exchange Market, Food Processing, Climate Resilient Agriculture, Financial Inclusion, Household Debt, Entrepreneurial Policies, Virtual Currencies, Digital Payments, and Health Sector; an Empirical Analysis of South Asian Countries.

More than 200 participants across the states and union territories of India such as Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Kerala, West Bengal, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chandigarh were gathered for brain storming sessions on the various seminar themes.

Awasthi, and faculty members Prof. Dipankar Sengupta, Prof. Prakash Antahal, Prof. Sunita Sharma, Dr. Virender Koundal, Dr. Manoj Bhatt, and Dr. Tsering Yangzon and Ph. D and M. The outcomes of the seminar are planned to be disseminated through journal publications from the Universal Wiser, Singapore and edited volume(s) from the reputed international publisher.
