Exhibition and Valedictory program of the Skill Development Training Program commences at JU

JAMMU: Centre for Studies in Museology, University of Jammu in collaboration with the University Entrepreneurship & Skill Development Centre (UESDC) organized an exhibition on Basholi Painting as a part of the valedictory program on skill development training program on Basholi Miniature Painting.

The theme of the workshop ‘Basholi Miniature Painting' was chosen to align with the University's mandate of skill development and entrepreneurship and by how innovation can help society to make a transition from ‘Job seeker to Job provider'.

This program is in continuation to the workshop and training program organized on ‘Bamboo, Cane and straw Crafts Development' in 2021 to train the students of this university. The Centre for Studies in Museology also provides practical training on handicrafts to the students in addition to teaching.

Chief Guest, Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, inaugurated the exhibition of the paintings made by the participants of the skill development training program on Basholi Miniature Painting.

The Vice-Chancellor was welcomed by Prof. Poonam Chaudhary, Director, Centre for Studies in Museology and Prof. Alka Sharma, Convener, UESDC, University of Jammu.

Prof Rai in his address mentioned that Basholi painting is of our heritage and to revive it, is the work of our institutions. He further stressed that the training would help students in a lot of areas of life because he believes that painting is a form of meditation, a ‘sadhana which helps an individual to concentrate and therefore is a part of life.

He reiterated that it is of utmost importance to preserve our heritage and the time has come when we must dissolve the boundaries of subjects and work together towards achieving this goal. He congratulated the Centre for giving participants with raw talent a chance to enhance their skills. He commended the Centre for taking such an initiative and encouraged to take it to the next level by creating advanced level course.

Basholi Miniature Paintings is a famous school of art under Pahari miniature paintings but the local artists practicing this art are struggling to keep this art alive and hence this initiative has been taken by the Centre as a small step towards preserving and protecting the skills and knowledge of this traditional art.

The trainer of the workshop Sohan Singh Billawria and his team, have trained the participants who were women from various Self-Help groups associated with JKRLM (Jammu & Kashmir Rural Development Mission) and students from IMFA (Institute of Music and Fine Arts) and other regions of Jammu.

The participants have learned the method of preparation of base for Basholi Miniature Painting, have also improved their artistic skills for entrepreneurship, and apply preventive conservation methods to safeguard paintings.

They have also learnt about the management and planning of the layout design for exhibiting paintings in museums and commercial galleries. Students who have excelled during this workshop will be invited for an advance level course later by the Centre.

The program was also graced by the presence of Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar University of Jammu; Dr. Prakash Anthal, DSW, University of Jammu;Prof. Vinay Chauhan, Dean Placement, University of Jammu; Sanjeev Mahajan, Controller of examination, University of Jammu; Rakesh Sharma and Dr. Amarjeet Singh from IMFA; Ashok Choudhary, Additional Director JKRLM; Dr. Sunil Khosa, Art Historian and many other dignitaries.

Certificates and mementoes were distributed to all the participants.
