JU organises Gender Sensitization Workshop

JAMMU: The Centre for Women's Studies, in collaboration with Department of Urdu and Punjabi (jointly), University of Jammu organized 14th workshop under the ongoing series for the students and scholars of both the Departments.
Dr. Savita Nayyar, Faculty, Department of Law, University of Jammu was the resource person.
The program began with the welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women's Studies, who spoke about the relevance of Gender sensitization workshop for the students and scholars.
She mentioned that such workshop is an initiative to talk on Gender and society at large to understand the gender disparities at the ground level.
Further she said that we have to acknowledge that we all are different even two girls/boys are not same. Thus we have to understand and acknowledge this difference and it should not be the reason for inequality in the society.
Dr. Savita Nayyar, the key resource person for the workshop, spoke about the relevance of Gender sensitization workshop especially for students and scholars. She began the session by explaining about the problematic gender stereotyping prevalent in the society which not only creates inequality but also cause gender gaps in every sphere resulting in suppression and oppression of one gender by the other.
She gave Case references to elaborate about the phenomenon of Domestic Violence, Dowry, restrictions on movement of girls/women and also explained about the importance of consent.
Further, she gave details about the available legal provisions for women in terms of Sexual Harassment at Workplace and Domestic Violence.
In the concluding remarks Dr. Nayyar advised students to talk more on such issues and take a stand against inequality in the society as the youth are the ambassadors of change and future of our nation.
Prof. Mohd. Reyaz Ahmed, Head, Department of Urdu, in his remarks explained the importance of this workshop and expressed that the problematic perceptions and the gender disparities prevalent in the society needs to be changed.
He thanked the Centre for collaborating and conducting such a wonderful workshop for their students. Prof. Baljeet Kaur, Head, Department of Punjabi, also congratulated the Centre for organizing such workshop.
She stated that it is a high time to talk on such a relevant topic which will help all of us to understand gender and gender related issues.
Faculty members, Research Scholars, and large number of Students from both the departments actively participated in the workshop and raised many queries which were answered to their satisfaction by the resource person.
The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Kunzang Angmo, both Faculty members, Centre for Women's Studies.
The office staff from both the Departments looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
