Padma Shri Padma Sachdev PG Women College hosts extension lecture on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

JAMMU: Department of Home Science, Padma Shri Padma Sachdev Government PG College for women, Gandhi Nagar, in collaboration with MEYER Vitabiotics organized an extension lecture on "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) under the guidance of the principal of the college Prof. Minu Mahajan.

The lecture was organized to create awareness about PCOS among the students of the college as September is considered as PCOS awareness month.

The resource person on the occasion was Dr. Nirmala Pandita, Gynaecologist from LifeScan hospital, Jammu.

The programme started with a formal welcome address by Dr. Irvinder Kour, Head of the department of Home Science.

She welcomed the Principal, Resource Person, faculty members and students. She maintained that a lecture on PCOS was the need of the hour because the hormonal imbalance in women causes irregular periods, weight gain, infertility, acne and excessive hair growth which is a serious medical condition and requires immediate attention.

More than 150 students of Arts, Science and Commerce stream attended the lecture and benefitted from it.

The resource person, in her lecture, revealed the fact that 2 in 10 women have PCOS and can occur in girls as young as 11 years old and is the leading cause of infertility in women. She stressed upon the fact that PCOS has long term health risks like Type 2 diabetes , heart diseases and endometrial cancer if not treated at the right time. She also acquainted the students in detail about the causes, symptoms and prevention of PCOS.

Principal of the college, Prof. Minu Mahajan lauded the efforts of the department and initiative of Meyer Organics for organizing such a wonderful awareness programme which is the most prevalent disease in today's life. She stressed the young girls to introspect their lifestyle habits in order to prevent such disorder and asked the students to pass on the knowledge gained by word of mouth to other students also.

Present on the occasion were the faculty members of the college, organizing committee Dr. Anjali Bhat, Prof Neelam Bhagat, Dr. Neelima Gupta, Prof. Shivani Sawhney. The proceedings were conducted by Ms. Manisha Patti student of Sem 4th and vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Ramandeep Kour Dept. of Home science.
