Soham Kamotra becomes J&K’s first International Master

JAMMU: Soham Kamotra (Batch 2021-22) of Delhi Public School Jammu, an ace level and a top FIDE Chess player created a history in J&K by becoming 1st player from Jammu & Kashmir to get International Chess Master Norm.

He got this Norm after a splendid show in Abu Dhabi Master's Chess Championship held at Abu Dhabi, recently. Soham defeated 2 Grandmasters and one other besides drew with 4 international Masters to qualify for International Masters Norm.

It is noteworthy that Soham is National U-18 Champion 2022 and the highest rated Chess player of J&K. Earlier, he emerged as a National Chess Champion in the Open Section of MPL 31st National Under-18 Chess Championship held at Pollachi, Tamil Nadu. Soham also won a cash prize of Rs. 90,000/- in the said event.

Soham is also the first ever player from J&K U.T to be fully sponsored by the Govt. of India for the World Chess Championship, Asian Chess Championship and Commonwealth Chess Championship. Now, he will be fully sponsored by SAI and AICF for World Youth at Romania and also Asian Youth at Indonesia to be held in September & October, respectively.

Principal-DPS Jammu, Ruchi Chabra congratulated Soham and his parents for the glorious achievement and said that it is a proud moment for all of us that Soham has made a mark as J&K's first International Chess Master.

President-RCT, M.K Ajatshatru Singh, PVC, Dr. Kuwarani Ritu Singh and Director. S.S Sodhi congratulated Soham and his proud parents, Anu Gupta & Amit Mahajan, and also extended their best wishes for all his future endeavours.
