Centre for Women's Studies, JU organizes special lectures on Sexual Harassment at workplace

JAMMU: The Centre for Women's Studies, University of Jammu organized two special online lectures for the students of the certificate courses, namely Gender Issues and Women and Law, on the topic "Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) Act 201" .
The lectures were delivered by Prof. Gurpreet Bal, Former Dean and Head, Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar.
The lectures were spread over two sessions per day covering both theoretical and conceptual clarification and the implementation supported with various case studies.
The special lectures began with a welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women's Studies. She gave a brief overview of working of the Centre as well as of the two courses run by the Centre.
Prof. Gurpreet Bal gave details about Gender aspects related to Gender and Violence and highlighted the status of women in the Patriarchal society who are facing various types of harassment at both private and public sphere.
She also focused on the principles related to Patriarchy given by Andrea Dwarkin highlighting the ideology of male supremacy in the form of physical power, power of terror, owning, naming, money and culture of silence.
She further dwelt on the Vishakha Guidelines and gave insights about the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2013. She also shared her personal experiences as chairperson of ICC at GNDU, Amritsar and averred on the importance and working of Internal Complaint Committee in the institutions of higher learning and at the workplace to address the challenges of harassment and its prevention.
The lectures were attended by other students and research scholars as well. Both the sessions were very interactive and students raised many queries and shared their observations and experiences.
The formal Vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty of the Centre for Women's Studies.
