Centre for Women's Studies, JU begins Gender sensitisation workshop series

JAMMU: The Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu organized the first workshop of the series on Gender Sensitization under ‘Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav Celebration' for the PG students of Department of Education, University of Jammu.

Prof. Vibhuti Patel, former Prof. Advanced Centre for Women's Studies, TISS and SNDT Women's University Mumbai was the resource person.

The workshop began with the welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women's Studies, University of Jammu, who welcomed all the participants and apprised them with the aim of conducting such a workshop.

Prof. Vibhuti Patel, the key speaker for the workshop traced the emergence of the various reform movements which helped in liberating Women and to bring equality among the sexes. She explained the objectives of gender sensitisation in detail.

She highlighted the limiting factors for the participation of Women in the developmental process and suggested various ways to overcome these barriers.

She also gave details about WID, WAD and GAD approaches and also insights about the HDI status of India. Further, she deliberated on Millennium Developmental Goals and Sustainable Developmental Goals for Gender equality.

Prof Rajiv Rattan, Head Department of Education gave insights about the need of Gender sensitization and also appreciated the efforts of the Centre for conducting relevant workshops. The workshop was attended by 100 participants comprising of students and teachers of the Education department besides some participants from within and outside the University.

The workshop was very well received by the participants and they actively took part in the interactive discussion which was followed by the lecture and illustrations.

The participants asked questions on issues like marital rape, property rights and safety concerns etc.

The workshop was conducted by Dr Saranjit Kaur, faculty centre for Women Studies and she also presented the formal vote of thanks.
