Online gambling players up the ante during COVID-19 lockdown
Jun 13, 2021
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a standstill, forcing people all over the world to remain shut in their homes as health experts and governments find ways to combat the spread of the virus. This means that except for essential activities, individuals had to stay locked down and find ways to pass time-be it spending time with family and friends virtually or searching for casual entertainment online such as playing real money teen patti at sevenjackpots' platform or sites like purewin.com
Online gaming relatively unaffected by pandemic
In fact, the gaming industry is one sector that has been relatively unaffected during the pandemic. In the United Kingdom, a recent study conducted by the University of Bristol found that "gambling online saw the biggest increase during lockdown, irrespective of gambling frequency."
"This study provides unique real-time insights into how people's attitudes and gambling behaviour changed during lockdown when everyone was stuck inside and unable to participate in most social activities," lead author Professor Alan Emond, of the University of Bristol's Medical School, said.
In India, whose government completely restricted the movement of the population except for essential activities, user engagement in online gaming among those aged 25-35 years rose during the lockdown period in 2020, according to an Economic Times report.
Tech savvy players shaping India's online gaming market
India's largely mobile-first market is estimated to have around 365 million online gamers in the financial year 2020, while a separate KMPG study expects the industry to "become a USD1 billion opportunity by 2021." According to a Statista research, "Overall, India ranked the highest in terms of growth in online game downloads on app stores with a growth rate of 165 percent between 2016 to 2018."
Aside from being tech savvy, players in India just want to play for fun. As ENV Media co-founder Fredrik Brännlund explained in an interview with Casino Days: "We researched all the different online gambling related search terms from various SEO tools, and I think was 20 percent of all these online gambling related searches in Spain is related to bonuses, 35-40 [percent] in Italy. Know the percentage in India... 0.3 [percent]."
India states with most online gamblers per capita
So which state has the most online gambling players per capita?
In their report, "India's Richest Cities and Its Large Online Gambling Communities," ENV Media experts revealed that in terms of traffic generation, Maharashtra has 17.4 percent market share followed by Telangana with 9.9 percent market share. Rounding up the list are West Bengal (9.3 percent), Karnataka (9.3 percent), Uttar Pradesh (8 percent), Tamil Nadu (8 percent), and Delhi (8 percent) of market share.
"India's gambling population is rather diverse in economic and demographic terms, with complex behaviors, habits and consumption patterns," the report noted, adding, "Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad lead the way. To a relative extent, Pune, Ahmedabad and Surat also contribute to a better online gambling penetration in India."
