JU organizes a Training Session on Sexual Harassment at Workplace

JAMMU: A training session on Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal) was organized by the Internal Complaints Committee on Sexual Harassment, University of Jammu in collaboration with Department of Students Welfare.

Rekha Sharma (Chairperson National Commission for Women) was the Chief Guest of the function and Prof. Manoj Dhar , Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu presided over the function.

Rekha Sharma in her address during the function emphasized the need to be sensitive towards the issues of Sexual Harassment at the workplace and shared some instances where such incidents were effectively addressed by the Commission. While chairing the question-answer session, she cleared the doubts of the participants and provided them with more clarity on the subject.

She laid emphasis on the formation of various committees at different levels for strictly dealing with the issues of sexual harassment. She also emphasized prior training and workshops of the committee members.

Prof. Manoj Dhar, Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu in his address while appreciating the conduct of such training session pointed out the need for safe workplaces and outlined various initiatives undertaken by the University of Jammu in this direction.

He also pointed out the policy of Zero Tolerance of such incidents in the institution of higher learning and prayed for a gender-sensitive and ‘complaint - free campus', wherein all the women faculty members, non-teaching members, scholars, and students can safely pursue their professional and academic endeavours. He congratulated the organisers and also extended his best wishes for the smooth conduct of the programme.

Seema Shekher, a senior advocate of J&K High Court was the keynote speaker of the training session. 

While explaining the legal frameworks and their implementation in an elaborate manner, she pointed out the need for such laws. She also highlighted the role of women in modern society and therefore the importance of safe workplaces. Besides discussed about the ways and means to be used by the women to deal with any such issue and shared her experiences of dealing with such cases and emphasized on the need to be more sensitive to such issues and incidences.

Shabnam Shah Kamili, Project Director, SRCW/ICPS in her address shared her experiences of handling such cases of sexual harassment and the issues arising due to them for the individuals as well as their families.

Prof Alka Sharma, Presiding Officer Internal Complaints Committee presented the formal welcome address and also shared a presentation that gave a detailed insight into the various aspects of POSH Act, 2013. Dr. Sumita Sharma, Member Internal Committee conducted the proceedings and presented a formal Vote of Thanks.

The training session was attended by more than 100 participants from various Government Colleges affiliated to the University of Jammu who was the Internal Committee members for their respective colleges.
