Coronavirus found in ice cream: Company in China sealed; over 1,600 employees placed in quarantine

BEIJING: The coronavirus was recently detected in ice cream produced in eastern China, triggering a recall of cartons from the same batch. As per a statement by the city government, the Daqiaodao Food Co, Ltd in China's Tianjin has now been sealed and its employees are being tested for the COVID-19.

So far, no one has reportedly contracted the virus from the ice cream.

The government revealed that most of the 29,000 cartons in the batch had yet to be sold. It added that the authorities are tracking down 390 cartons sold in Tianjin.

The raw materials used to produce the ice cream included New Zealand milk powder and whey powder from Ukraine, said the government.

As per Independent, all the products of Daqiaodao have been sealed after all the three samples sent by the company to the municipal centre for disease control tested positive for COVID.

Daqiaodao also confirmed that its 1,662 employees have been quarantined. Out of 1,662 employees, 700 have tested negative for COVID-19, while results for the remaining employees are yet to be confirmed.

Last week, an international expert team of the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in China to carry out joint scientific research with Chinese scientists on the origin-tracing of the novel coronavirus.

The overall global coronavirus caseload has topped 95 million, while the deaths have surged to over two million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

There are 95,003,533 confirmed COVID-19 positive cases in the world and the global death toll due to coronavirus stands at 2,029,938.

The United States, India and Brazil are the top three countries in terms of the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases. The US has recorded 23,928,643 COVID-19 cases and the country's death toll soared to 397,500.
