JU takes many landmark decisions, many novel initiatives and many long pending demands met

JAMMU: For the first time in the history of University of Jammu, a marathon online meeting of Academic Council was held continuously for 9 long hours.
The Academic Council under the Chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Manoj K. Dhar took several landmark decisions which include initiation of several novel programmes, establishment of new departments, new research centres and other academic decisions which are likely to change the academic landscape of the University and help the University to propel into an era of further excellence.
The meeting started with the opening remarks of the Vice Chancellor.
He expressed gratitude to the Chancellor and Advisor (S) for time to time guidance in matters pertaining to the University.
Prof. Dhar also underlined the various initiatives which the University has taken in the recent past that include; creation of University Research Fund, establishment of Business Incubation and Innovation centre, Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre, and Industry Academia Interface Centre.
Informing the house, Prof. Dhar said that University is soon going to start an Institute of Science and Technology at Poonch Campus.
The University has recently revised and updated the Curricula of all the disciplines by conducting 50 workshops involving 350 experts from prestigious Universities of the country, he informed.
Besides the University also conducted various National and International conferences/seminars, various national and international sports events, 12 benchmark series lectures and large number of placements for studentswith good packages, said the Vice-Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor complimented the frontline Corona Warriors of University of Jammu in particular and of the UT J&K in general.
The Academic council endorsed the proposal for establishment of Department of Journalism and Media Studies, which was a long pending demand of the students and the society.
The Vice Chancellor had constituted an Expert Committee of eminent academicians who recommended the establishment of the Department.
Similarly, an Advisory committee of renowned experts strongly recommended the establishment of the Department of Philosophy. It may be mentioned that a need was felt to have a department of Philosophy in the University of Jammu in view of unique position and resources of the University in this region.
The Academic council also endorsed establishment of Directorate of Hindi and two year Executive MBAProgrammeand Diploma in Museology & Archaeology.
One of the outstanding proposals for strengthening of Research in the frontline areas was the creation of a Research cluster in the University. The University is planning to establish 7 centres of excellence in various research areas which will hugely benefit the faculty, researchers and students of the region as well as the UT.
The cluster is expected to become functional in a State of art building and will be developed with the help of the grants sanctioned to the University under RUSA.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu drew attention of the members towards the difficult circumstances due to Covid19 and stressed on the fact that the University has to rebuild, reinvent and reposition and find out of box solutions to various problems.
Around 60 agenda items were presented by Prof Rajni Dhingra, Registrar, University of Jammu. All the items were discussed in great detail along with the action taken report on the resolutions of the last Academic Council.
Academic Council also approved institution of Best Debator Trophy in the fond memory of Late Prof Shailender Singh Jamwal, former Dean Students Welfare. The Alumni Association of the University of Jammu and its constitution was also approved.
The Council also resolved to start the integrated M.Phil/Ph.D Programme in the University. The council also endorsed the revised Academic Calendar and COVID-19 Action Plan as one time exception for this academic session ( 2019-2020) only and not to make a precedent. It was resolved that the interns who have successfully completed Swachh Bharat Summer Internship programme would be awarded two credits, which are in consonance with MHRD, Govt. of India guidelines.
The Council also recommended that the university would not hike its fee for next two years, which under normal circumstances used to be 10 per cent hike in fee every year.
With regard to various Under graduate and Post graduate examinations,detailed deliberations and discussions were held keeping in view the guidelines of the UGC, New Delhi, health and safety of the students and other considerations, and it was resolved that the Controller of Examinations, University of Jammu shall soon separately release a detailed press release/notifications for the benefit of the students.
Various other important academic issues of the University were also discussed in the Academic Council meeting, which was attended by Prof Naresh Padha, Dean Research Studies, Prof RajniKant, Controller of Examinations, Prof R. K.Ganjoo, Dean Planning,Deans of various Faculties, Rectors/Directors of the Offsite campuses, Heads of the Departments, Conveners of Boards of Studies, College Principals and other officials of the University.
The meeting was coordinated by Dr.Sumita Sharma, Deputy Registrar (Academics) and technically steered by Dr. Vinay Thusoo (I/C Media) and Sh.Guneet Sudan (Asst. Director, IT enabled Services).
