National Science Day Celebrated with enthusiasm at JU

JAMMU: The University of Jammu celebrated National Science Day 2020 with full zeal and enthusiasm.
Theme of this year's Science day titled 'Women in Science' and their contribution in advancing science and technology in India was celebrated in the Convention Hall, The Business School,University of Jammu.
The event was organised by the Dept of Botany, UNiversity of Jammu with active collaboration of all Science Departments of the University.
Prof. Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, the Chief Guest of the function in his address emphasized on the need for basic infrastructure development in schools and colleges as a driving force for attracting students particularly girls to take up science as career, increasing women scientist ratio in the country.
Prof. Dhar also spoke on the need of quality science education and development of scientific temperament among the youth especially in the women of the UT of J&K. He informed the gathering that while women have enormous and interest in scientific activities, there are several areas where in the involvement of women is abysmally low.
Therefore, we need to address these issues for effective transformation of the society by bridging the gap of gender equality. Prof. Rajni Dhingra, Guest of Honour & human resource development scientist, Registrar of JU deliberated on the factors responsible for lack of motivation among women in taking science as a profession.
Prof. Naresh Padha, Special Guest spoke on the development of basic scientific nature and prospects of science and technology as a career option for the youth. Providing encouraging atmosphere and motivation at home could be a major player in developing the interest of girls to take scientific career, were the remarks of Special Guest, Prof. Roopma Gandotra.
Earlier, Prof. Namrata Sharma, Head, Department of Botany and Organizer of the event welcomed the guests and shared her views about the role of women in science.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sikander Pal, Co-organizer of the event.
Proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr. Harpreet Bhatia. On the occasion three invited lectures to sensitize the audience about the future prospects of young women in science were presented.
Among these, Dr. Asha Chaubey and Dr. Suphala Gupta Senior Scientists, CSIR-IIIM Jammu spoke on the various facets of scientific discoveries and paradigms in improving employability in general, while, Dr. Poonam Parihar, Senior Assistant Professor, SKUAST-J spoke on the role of Agri-entrepreneurship and its contribution in empowering rural and urban women in India.
Invited speakers were honored by Prof. Geeta Sumbali, Former, Dean Life Sciences, Prof. Veenu Koul and Dr. Sanjana Kaul.
Among others Prof. Meena Sharma, Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Prof. Kamal K. Kapoor, Prof. Raj K Rampal, Prof. Anuradha Sharma, Prof. KS Charak, Prof. Rakesh Vaid, Prof. Sanjiv Sambyal, Prof. Lalit Sen Sharma, Dr. Harish, Dr. Geeta and Dr. Skarma Nonzom were also present on the occasion.
Overall event was attended by more than 250 persons including Heads, Rectors, Directors and faculty members of various science departments, research scholars and post graduate students.
