International Disability Day celebrated at MIER College

JAMMU: To mark the International Day for Persons with Disability, a series of events were organized by the Department of Special Education, MIER College in collaboration with the Inclusive School, of Model Academy.
The theme for this yearwas “Promoting the Participation of Persons with Disabilities and their Leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda.” Dr. Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
The students of Inclusive School Model Academy presented a cultural bonanza starting with the welcome song on the theme “We Welcome You” followed by a short film on understanding Autism. Dr. Rohnika Sharma, HoD UG Department showed a video on Inclusive Education and shared inspirational success stories of people with disabilities.
Students with special needs gave a breathtaking dance performance on song “RabbaRabbaMeeBarsa” in addition to a melodious rendition of a dogri song “Khand Mithe Log Dogre”. A video presentation was done by Tania Gill, special educator Inclusive School.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER said that this day iscelebrated to help everyone become more compassionate and understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities. We all need to ensure that all people have equal opportunities for education, work, health, and success and as teachers we shoulder this responsibility.
The students participated with great zeal and enthusiasm. All the students were given gifts by the Chief Guest. Rupa Gupta, Jt. Director MIER appreciated the efforts of inclusive school-Model Academy and the Department of Special Education and added that such activities are needed to create and generate empathy towards children with exceptionalities. Manju Wali, Convener Co-curricular committee Model Academy presented a formal Vote of Thanks.
