5th J&K Agricultural Science Congress inaugurated at SKUAST-J

JAMMU: A three-day mega event i.e., 5th Jammu & Kashmir Agricultural Science Congress was inaugurated at the Baba Jito Auditorium of Main Campus Chatha of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu.
The Congress on the theme "Climate Change Management for Sustainable Agriculture, Livestock Farming and Ecological Development" is being organized in collaboration with J&K State Council for Science & Technology Government of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Nirmal Singh, Speaker J&K Legislative Assembly and former Deputy Chief Minister of the State was the chief guest in the inaugural function who started the programme with the lighting of the lamp in the presence of other dignitaries and more than 300 delegates from all over the country.
Dr Singh opined that attaining livelihood security, sustainable food production and environmental protection has always been a challenging task and he expressed happiness that such a congress which focuses challenges on climate change management for sustainable agriculture and livestock farming is being organized in SKUAST-J. He further stressed on plantation of horticultural trees and crops so that the problem of soil erosion is minimized in slopy lands. He hoped that recommendations derived out from the deliberations on various issues will go a long way in meeting the targets of food grain production without depletion of natural resources in a sustainable manner.
Dr. KS Risam Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu expressed his satisfaction for organizing a congress on such a burning issue relevant to survival of the mankind in coming years and for receiving support of a galaxy of the eminent speakers who have made a mark in their chosen field of research for giving their valuable time to present lead papers in this congress. He expressed hope that the recommendations coming out of the show will provide a way for improving the overall agricultural scenario of J&K state and effective technologies will be developed for the conservation and management of natural resources besides ensuring climate change management.
Dr Ananad Sharma Deputy Director General Indian Meterological Department, Govt. of India expressed hope that brainstorming information during this event will enlighten the delegates which will help them in shaping their future research road map keeping challenges for climate change management in their mind. Dr. JP Sharma Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu and organizing secretary of the congress extended warm welcome to the dignitaries and delegates for showing keen interest in attending this grand educational show.
He elaborated few of thematic areas of the science congress viz: climate resilience & associated challenges, sustainable live stock farming in era of climate change, protected cultivation & vertical farming and natural resource management to mitigate climate change. Dr. Sharma said that farmers & scientists interactions & exhibition of latest agro-technology will be part of science congress. He further focussed on present scenario regarding education, research and extension of the varsity.
Dr. Vikas Sharma Chairman Press and Media briefed the press that during the technical sessions, the eminent speakers from India will speak on various topics of immense importance and will stress on climate change scenario, management of water / land resources, alternate farming system, strategies in animal health and productivity besides sustainable agricultural production for livelihood security of farmers.
