ANANTNAG: District Administration Anantnag, in collaboration with the Excise department along with Social Welfare, Education, Health and other allied departments, today marked the observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a strong and collective resolve to eliminate the drug menace from the district.
The event was organized to raise awareness, foster public involvement, and underscore the importance of coordinated efforts in the fight against substance abuse.
This day serves as a powerful call to action for governments, civil society, and individuals to recognize the pervasive harm caused by drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
It also highlights the urgent need for proactive and preventive strategies, while reinforcing the message that everyone whether a policymaker, educator, health worker, community leader, or citizen has a vital role to play in creating a drug-free world.
During the event, speakers addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of unified action and grassroots participation in combating drug abuse. They stressed that addressing this issue requires more than enforcement, it necessitates social engagement, psychological support, community education, and above all, compassion and collaboration.
Speakers also commended the efforts of the district administration, which has been organizing awareness camps, sensitization drives, school and college outreach programs, seminars, and counseling sessions across the district.
These sustained initiatives are beginning to yield tangible results in the form of increased community awareness, reduced stigma, and improved access to support services for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.
Adding a cultural and emotional dimension to the program, a thought-provoking skit on drug abuse was performed by local drama artists, which resonated deeply with the audience. The performance, depicting the tragic consequences of drug addiction on individuals and families, was widely appreciated and served as a powerful medium of advocacy and awareness.
The event witnessed overwhelming participation from district officers, students from various educational institutions, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, Self-Help Group (SHG) members, volunteers, health professionals, teachers, and civil society representatives, all united by a shared vision of a drug-free Anantnag.
