NEW DELHI: Days after YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia faced backlash for making a controversial joke involving parents, another comedian, Swati Sachdeva, has sparked controversy with a joke about her mother.
A clip from her performance, which is circulating on social media, shows Sachdeva mocking her mother after she discovered a vibrator. The comedian claims her mother, trying to act "cool," wanted to have a conversation about it.
"My mother is trying to be a cool mom, but it's not working. I recently had an awkward moment with her after she found my vibrator. She came to me confidently and asked me to talk to her ‘as a friend," she said during her set.
She extended the joke by involving her father as well.
Soon after the video surfaced online, it sparked backlash on X (formerly Twitter), with many users condemning her remarks as disrespectful.
One user wrote, "Probably the most cringeworthy stand-up 'comedy' you will ever see. Swati Sachdeva talks about her mother discovering her vibrator and wanting to have a talk like friends...The only way these liberal 'comedians' can get a laugh out of their audience is by using vulgar language and sexual innuendo."
Another user commented, "Yet another so-called stand-up comedian pushing the limits of obscenity just to entertain a woke audience! Swati Sachdeva has gone too far, normalizing crude and shameless humor in the name of 'progressive comedy.' Is this really humor, or just a desperate attempt to stay relevant by being as vulgar as possible? Comedy should be funny, not disgusting."
A third user expressed, "Shameless...sharmnaak. A little humor and fun is fine, but this is crossing the line... @GoI_MeitY @PMOIndia need to ban or restrict the content in these shows."
Sachdeva is the latest comedian to face backlash for controversial remarks.
Earlier in February, Ranveer Allahabadia, a YouTuber and content creator, triggered a massive uproar both online and offline with his remarks on Samay Raina's web show India's Got Latent. Raina, Allahabadia, and others involved with the YouTube program are facing multiple police complaints.
