LG rolls out 3 new criminal laws in UT Ladakh

LEH: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd Rollout three new criminal laws and also inaugurated a poster exhibition in UT of Ladakh.

In this regard a function was organised by ADGP Ladakh Dr SD Singh Jamwal.

Three new criminal laws came into effect on July 1, 2024, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which will replace the British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, LG Mishra stated that these three new criminal laws have been introduced for the convenience of the citizens of India.

He stated that new leadership and resolve were needed to replace the criminal laws introduced by the British colonial rulers and added that this was only possible under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Stating that digitisation is one of the ways to ensure the success of these three new criminal laws, the LG highlighted the need to avoid people operating these technologies to ensure that the citizens of India have access to the benefits of these three criminal laws.

Seeking cooperation from the people of Ladakh to make Ladakh a Corruption and Delay-Free region, the LG stated that the Ladakhi people should become more alert and aware while the Government officials should clear the files at the earliest.

He also stated that the three new criminal laws have been introduced to reduce the gap between the establishment and the people on the other side of the establishment.
Earlier, the LG unveiled books on the three criminal laws and also distributed tablets among the Investigating Officers from Ladakh Police.

Law Officer at PHQ Leh, Saira Parveen, spoke about the major changes introduced in the three new criminal laws.

Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, Stanzin Chosphel, former Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, elected members, administrative secretaries, representatives from religious, political institutions, officials from Law Department, Police Department, Head of Departments (HoDs), Government officials and students were present during the event.
