World Elder Abuse Awareness Day observed at Ganderbal

GANDERBAL: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Ganderbal, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare Ganderbal and Senior Citizen Home Ganderbal, observed World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today at Sakhi One Stop Centre Wayil Ganderbal.

The objective of the event was to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation faced by older persons, promoting their dignity, safety, and rights. The event aimed to sensitize the public about the importance of protecting the rights of senior citizens and to provide them with information about the various legal remedies available to them.

The initiative was effectively overseen by Abdul Nasir, Chairman, DLSA, Ganderbal, along with the guidance of Sheikh Babar Hussain, Secretary, DLSA Ganderbal.

During the event, Sajid Irfan, Deputy LADC Ganderbal, highlighted the key provisions of the NALSA Legal Services scheme for Senior Citizens, 2016, with respect to legal aid and assistance, representation in courts, and other appellate authorities. He emphasized the role of DLSA Ganderbal in providing legal aid to senior citizens.

Tanveer Ashraf, Legal Aid Defense Counsel, DLSA Ganderbal, delivered an insightful lecture on the importance of upholding the fundamental rights and dignity of senior citizens. He sensitized the audience about the growing concern of elder abuse in families and communities, urging collective responsibility and legal vigilance.

He elaborated on the legal remedies available to elderly persons, including the right to maintenance from children and heirs, protection from abuse and neglect, and entitlement to health and social welfare schemes.

Adv. Aqib Ul Ahad Wani emphasized that elder abuse is not only a moral failure but a legal violation. He underscored the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, as a landmark law that gives elderly parents the right to seek maintenance and protection from their children or legal heirs. He also elaborated on the constitutional rights guaranteeing the dignity and welfare of the elderly, personal laws mandating maintenance obligations, and government schemes and helpline services available to support senior citizens.

The event was attended by a large number of senior citizens, civil society members, and stakeholders. Participants were informed about the toll-free National Legal Helpline number 15100, through which elderly individuals can seek immediate legal advice and support.

DLSA Ganderbal reiterates its commitment to protecting the rights of senior citizens and promoting their dignity and well-being. The Authority urges the public to join hands in creating a society that values and respects its elderly population.
