WARDHA: The transformative journey of the Jammu and Kashmir College on Wheels with female students from various universities and affiliated colleges of the Union Territory concluded today amid a profound visit to Sewagram at Paunar in Wardha-the final destination of the initiative of Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor J&K UT and Chancellor University of Jammu.

Under the visionary guidance of Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chairman, Higher Education Council, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, the idea behind this visit was to acquaint students with the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Officials at Sewagram Ashram provided the students an insight into its history, enhancing their understanding of this significant institution.

The contingent delved into Gandhiji's philosophy of non-violence, simplicity, and communal harmony during their visit to Sewagram. Exploring the historical significance of Sewagram, a pivotal site in India's freedom struggle, provided the students with a deeper understanding of the Father of the Nation's vision, ideals, and principles.

A key highlight of the educational sojourn was the contingent's visit to the workshop at Sewagram, witnessing the meticulous process of crafting Khadi clothes. This hands-on experience allowed the students to appreciate the artistry and dedication involved in producing Khadi, a fabric deeply intertwined with India's cultural heritage.

The students also visited New Talim premises adjacent to Sewagram Ashram where the officials provided them a deeper understanding of educational practices inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. The visit to the New Talim premises complemented their overall experience, fostering a holistic appreciation for Gandhian principles and their application in various facets of life.

The College on Wheels initiative aims to broaden students' horizons through immersive experiences beyond the classroom. The Sewagram visit emphasized the program's commitment to fostering cultural understanding, social responsibility, and a holistic approach to education.

As the contingent returns to Jammu and Kashmir, they carry not only memories of a meaningful journey but also a profound understanding of the principles espoused by Mahatma Gandhi. The College on Wheels initiative remains dedicated to shaping future leaders embodying values of inclusivity, peace, and sustainable progress.

In his message, Prof Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, the nodal varsity of the journey, expressed hope that the students had an enriching experience during their journey, which will go a long way in enriching their knowledge and wisdom. He hoped the students would go back home with cherished memories of their two-long journey that enabled them to visit various reputed institutions of the country besides historic and iconic places.

"Such visits play a pivotal role in strengthening the bonds of unity and a sense of camaraderie among the students," Prof Rai said and wished the participating students all the best in all their endeavors in pursuit of academics.

Later in the day, the students participated in the second phase of preliminary Charkha Competition. The final competition among the two best students of all institutions shall be held on December 01, 2023.

The College on Wheels initiative united students from various universities and colleges of J&K for an educational journey that transcended traditional boundaries. By fostering experiential learning, the program aims to shape well-rounded individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

Envisioned by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the College on Wheels, a special train exclusively earmarked for the two-week trip of girl students from Jammu and Kashmir to premiere institutions and places of the country, was flagged off from Mata Vaishno Devi University Railway Station Katra on November 19.

The Lieutenant Governor said the College on Wheels is inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi, where he undertook an epic tour of the country by train, interacted with people from all walks of life, and awakened the society with universal and eternal values Satya and Ahimsa, Truth and Non-Violence. He exuded confidence that the journey will be a lifetime opportunity to discover diverse regions, culture of the country, and to explore new aspects of life and wisdom.

The contingent comprises 780 students along with their mentors and the administrative staff from the University of Jammu, University of Kashmir, Cluster University of Jammu, Cluster University of Kashmir, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Katra, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri, Islamic University of Science and Technology, Kashmir, affiliated colleges of JU and KU and Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC), New Delhi.
