Karwa Chauth, an auspicious festival celebrated by women in the northern part of India is a festival celebrated by married women.

On this day, married women observe a fast for their husband's happy and long life.

Women observe a nirjala vrat (one in which neither do they drink water nor consume food for the entire day) they ray to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesh Women get all dolled up and begin their fast before sunrise and end it after seeing the moon.

The origin of Karwa Chauth can be traced back to Mahabharata when Savitri begged the god of death, Lord Yama for her husband's soul.
