Amar Singh College, Srinagar organises Extension Lecture on ‘Emerging Trends in Cyber crime'

SRINAGAR: Cyber Jagrukta Committee of Amar Singh College, Srinagar on Thursday organised an extension Lecture on ‘Emerging Trends in Cyber crime'.
Resource person for the event was Mussadiq Majeed Basu, Dy.S.P CICE.
Among others, faculty and students of different departments participated in the programme.
The inaugural session was attended by the Principal of the College, Prof Bashir Ahmed Rather, faculty members of the institution and the students.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal of the College traced the Genesis of crimes at pan global level and talked about the strategies and tactics employed by different ruling regimes to tackle crime.
He drew a corollary of crime and development and how one affects other phenomenally and how nations have made various laws to combat it. He also threw light on cyber crimes, cyber hygiene and other ancillary issues.
Mussadiq Majeed Basu, resource person for the event spoke at length about a multitude of cyber crimes which the cyber criminals indulge to make the life of a common man miserable. A basic understanding of common cyber crimes like phishing, website spoofing, ransom-ware, malware, hacking etc was also disseminated among the participants.
The speaker also delineated the legal redressal mechanism available to the victims under different sections of IT Act and guided the audience about the modus operandi to approach the law enforcement agencies in case cyber criminals get success in attacking a gullible person.
In order to make the presentation more lucid and gripping, a few case studies pertaining to financial frauds, cyber impersonation, data theft and sextortion were discussed at length to outline the broader contours of such crimes and the legal recourse available to the victims.
He talked about digital media ethics and information technology rules (intermediary guidelines) to make the audience aware of the institutional support system available to both the state structures and the society at large to safeguard their privacy and make their digital landscape presence healthy and safe.
Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Head of Department of Computer Science Prof. Gurdeep Singh Sodhi who besides welcoming the guest introduced the nitty-gritty of the topic. Prof Gurdeep stressed that the tremendous increase in cyber crime is due to inadequate software, expired security tools, easily available hacking tools and lack of awareness among the public.
