25 more students test positive, Leh shuts schools indefinitely

LEH: Twenty five more students of a private school in Leh on Saturday tested positive for COVID-19 taking total number of positives in the same school to 45 and prompting the district Leh administration to shut all schools in the district for an indefinite period from November 15 excepting Board examinations.

A total of 37 COVID positive cases were reported in Leh district in the Union Territory of Ladakh while no fresh cases were recorded in Kargil.

Among 37 positives, 25 were students of The Tibetans SOS Children's Village School at Choglamsar Leh, who were putting up in the school hostel. On November 7, 20 students of the same school had tested positive for the viral infection.

In early September, 56 students and staff members of Druk Padma Karpo School Leh, popularly known as Rancho School, had tested positive for Coronavirus.

Soon after more students tested positive for COVID-19, District Magistrate Leh Shrikant Balasaheb Suse ordered closure of all Government and private schools including residential hostels/school in Leh district from November 15 till further orders except for conduct of the Board examinations.

"The Board examinations for Class 10th, 11th and 12th shall be conducted as per date sheets issued by the J&K Board of School Education, Sub Office Leh with strict observance of COVID-19 Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs)/guidelines," the DC Leh order said.

He asked the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Leh to immediately carry out mandatory COVID sampling of all students of Class 9 residing in residential hostels/schools before their departure to houses. Likewise, sampling of the students of 10th, 11th and 12th classes residing in residential hostels/schools shall be carried out immediately after the conclusion of their Board examinations, he said.

The DC Leh said Online classes shall be encouraged with all COVID Appropriate Behaviour.

With 37 positive cases, Ladakh now has 158 active positive cases including 154 in Leh and four in Kargil district.
