Aug 29, 2021
JAMMU: Every year National Sports Day is observed on 29 August to commemorate the birthday of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
Born on 29 August 1905 in present-day Prayagraj, UP, Major Dhyan Chand was the captain of the Gold medal-winning Indian hockey team at the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
The Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu celebrated National Sports Day 2021 at the University Campus.

The celebration of National Sports Day marks the recognition of outstanding performances of the Sportspersons in various National and International competitions/tournaments etc.
It is the day when these are bestowed with awards. Sports develop in us the spirit of sportsmanship and brotherhood. Sports day is all about motivating and encouraging young men and women, boys and girls, by recognizing the hard work of sportspersons who have made us proud by bringing laurels to the country.
Speaking on the occasion, the VC congratulated the entire staff of the Directorate and also said that the university will organize various Sports Events of National level in the future for the promotion of Sports in J&K. He appreciated the efforts of the Directorate to conduct various such events despite this prevailing Covid-19 situation.
Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar University of Jammu, Prof. Prakash C. Anthal, Dean Student's Welfare and Arun Malhotra, Former International Footballer of J&K were the Guests of Honour on the occasion.
Arun Malhotra also addressed the gathering with his remarkable words of inspiration. In his address he said, "It is believed that one of the reasons for not producing the international level players in our UT is lacking from modern level Sports Academies. Now the time has changed, the States / UTs across the country are hiring the services of reputed International players to enhance the skills of the players. This practice has produced great results.
In the present era, the Indian league is being played where all players from the rest of the country participate. However, it is observed that a scant representation is seen from Jammu and Kashmir. The main reason why players hinder to exhibit talent is lacking from modern skill and techniques which is improved only in Academies by the professionals.
If J&K really has to be in the game then some certain steps are required to be taken and first and foremost among all is establishment of Sports Academies. This only will ensure participation of JK players in I- league and even playing at International level."
Earlier, Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, JU presented a formal welcome address and shared that National Sports Day does not represent only a day to embrace Sports, to know its importance. No one can be made aware of the significance of its value in one day. National Sports Day marks the journeys of all those tenacious over-the-top athletes and players that did not leave any effort in making India proud. Making the public aware of its sports history in order to attain a fitter nation is the primary objective to celebrate this day.
