Fencer Riya wins gold in Khelo India University Games

JAMMU: J&K's ace fencer Riya Bakshi won gold medal in the ongoing historic Khelo India University Games, being held at Bhubaneswar in Odisha.

Representing Cluster University of Jammu, Riya bagged gold in foil event and emerged overall third in the girls category.

She was selected for these prestigious Games on the basis of her performance in the Inter-University Fencing Championship held earlier at Chandigarh, wherein she had claimed bronze medal.

Riya made it into the finals by defeating Kusum of Punjab University Chandigarh in the semifinal by (15-08) and in the final bout, Riya got the better of her counterpart Kajal of Punjab University Chandigarh.

She is being imparted training by former International Fencer Ujjwal Gupta, working in the Department of Youth Services and Sports, J&K.
