Children’s Day Celebrations by VIKALP conclude at SMVDU

KATRA: A student's initiative 'VIKALP' concluded its month long celebrations of Children's Day in the Sanskriti Kaksha at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) today.

The VIKALP is a program run by student volunteers of SMVDU to extend basic education to the under-privileged children from the nearby villages and to the children of the construction workers on the campus. The chief guest of the event was Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU Padma Shri Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha.

The event started with a welcome of the chief guest and a report on the activities conducted by the VIKALP to celebrate Children's Day, such as essay writing, panting, dancing, singing competitions and sports events. The event also witnessed beautiful cultural performances of songs, dance, poetry and speech recitation, and skit, by the students of VIKALP. The certificates and medals were given away by the chief guest to the winners of the various competitions.

Prof. Sinha in his address emphasized that education is the greatest gift one can present to anybody and education is the most effective tool to empower people. Quoting "Shanti Mantras" verses from the Vedas and Upanishads he exhorted all present to work for the well being of all.

Prof. Sinha also congratulated all the student volunteers for their dedication and hard work and said that if the VIKALP has been running for the last ten years then it will continue for times to come. More than hundred students of VIKALP evening classes and students volunteers were present at the event.

The gathering was also addressed by Dr. Rakesh kumar Jha, Dean Research and Development, Dr. Ani Kumar Tewari, Head School of Philosophy & Culture, Sudhesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, School of Computer Science and Engineering, Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Faculty Coordinator, NSS and Dr. Madhu Mangal Chaturvedi, Faculty Coordinator VIKALP. The vote of thanks was delivered by Akhil Kalsi, Student Coordinator VIKALP.
