MIER organizes international conference on ‘Building World Class Institutions’

JAMMU: A two-day international conference on "Building World Class Institutions: Issues and Challenges", sponsored by ICSSR, was organized by MIER College of Education.

Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the chief guest on this occasion. The conference was attended by eminent educationists, high officials, research scholars, faculty and students from colleges and universities not only from J&K but also from different parts of the country.

Dr Arun K Gupta, Chairman MIER Group of Institutions, in his introductory remarks, highlighted the parameters needed to create a world class institution such as, change in policies and procedures, infrastructure, leadership, resources, intensive teaching and mentoring, brand and value creation etc.

Dr Adit Gupta, Director and Principal MIER College, informed that the international conference was aimed at bringing educationists, administrators, thinkers and scholars in education on a common platform to deliberate upon different challenges that stand in the way of building world class institutions.

In the inaugural keynote address, Prof R G Kothari, former Vice-Chancellor, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat, stressed there is no global model of creating a world class institution but its parameters are known as quality index of education. He comprehensively deliberated on various issues and challenges of creating a world class institution such as funding or resources, governance, autonomy, academic differentiation, internationalism etc.

Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor JU, in his presidential remarks, emphasized that in order to create a world class institution collaboration with academic institutions at a national and international level should be focused. In addition, he added, it is important to generate an environment for multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches in research. He further said that students need to be involved in governance and management processes so that their voice and feedback can contribute in creating a top class institution. He reiterated the fact that there has to be freedom of action to create world class educational institutions.

Three keynote addresses were presented by Prof Rekha Koul, Dean International, School of Education, University of Curtin, Australia; Gautam Mahajan, President, Customer Value Foundation and Global Leader in Value Creation and Prof David Gibson, Director Learning Futures, Curtin University Australia. About 30 papers were presented on the first day of the conference. Dr Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson MIER presented a formal vote of thanks.
