KARGIL: To commemorate the 20 years of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Army on Thursday organised the 16th edition of Captain Saurabh Kalia LoC Cup at Kaksar in Kargil district.

A total of 32 teams from various villages of Kargil took part in the event held at Captain Saurabh Kalia Cricket Stadium.

The hard-fought final was played between DLS Shimsa and Yuva Karkit in the presence of senior military and civil dignitaries. DLS Shimsa won the tournament.

The winner, runners up and best performers of the tournament were felicitated with Rolling Trophy and cash rewards by Maj Gen Sanjeev Dogra, General Officer Commanding, ‘Forever in Operations' Division, and Commander, Kargil Sentinels Brigade.

The chief guest, Maj General Dogra, said the Army had always encouraged the participation and development of local youth in every field, including sports, and would continue to do so.

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in Ladakh and Kargil.

The cricket stadium, where the match was held, is named after Captian Saurabh Kalia, who laid down his life in service of the motherland on May 15, 1999, at the onset of Operation Vijay at Kaksar.

The Captain Saurabh Kalia LoC Cup is played every year to pay homage to him.
