Renovation of MA Stadium Jammu to International Cricket Ground gets a new deadline of August 2019

One of the key projects to put Jammu and Kashmir on the international map was the upgradation of MA Stadium Jammu to the status of the international cricket ground by March 2019. In March 2017, the Union Minister for Youth Services and Sports had informed the Lok Sabha that renovation and up-gradation of this stadium would be completed during the financial year 2017-18.

The project was decided to be built under Prime Minister's Development Project (PMDP) estimated to cost Rs 42.17 crore and to be executed through National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC). The project taken up by NPCC was started in February 2018 and has missed many deadlines since then. NPCC which is a Government of India Enterprise has proved to be otherwise resulting in no new specific time-frame having been fixed for completion of the project either by the executing agency or by the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council.

The upgradation included tasks like the main pavilion-extension and up-gradation to BCCI norms, up-gradation of seating facilities and installation of chairs, provision of public toilets, food plaza, floodlights for the stadium, cricket ground with a natural surface, practice pitch, and proper drainage system.

In the month of February, Naseem Chowdhary, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council had said that 60 percent work has been completed and we are hopeful that in the next two months, the leftover work will get completed by April but unfortunately that did not happen either. Besides, many pending tasks like installation of chairs and floodlights, preparation of outfield, and renovation of the pavilion are still in process.

The Secretary recently visited Jammu to take stock of the ongoing works and it appears that the renovation work will take a long time to complete.

The upgradation work is already going on at a snail's pace and the tall claims by authorities seem to fall flat.

Through sources, Jammu Links News found that the new deadline has been pushed to August 2019. Although considering the pace of NPCC, it is likely that this deadline will also be missed but let us all hope that Jammuities will get an International Cricket Ground in the month of August and Jammu can soon host International Cricket at Maulana Azad Stadium.
