GATE Cutoff Trend Analysis

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology, Madras successfully conducted GATE 2019 in the first and second weekend of February 2019 in two sessions. Candidates aspiring to gain admissions to M.Tech courses offered by the esteemed institutions across the country or to get recruited in the major PSUs are required to score equal to or more than the GATE Cut off in order to qualify the entrance exam. The Cut off varies, depending upon the institute as well as the course. 

IIT Madras released qualifying cutoff of GATE 2019 examination along with the result on March 16, 2019. The cutoff is released in the form of marks and is the minimum score needed to qualify the exam for that course. Based on the cut-off score, the conducting body will issue Scorecard, only those candidates who score equal to or more than the qualifying cut-off.

Previous Year GATE Cutoff Trends 

Civil Engineering

Based on the previous year trend GATE cut-off for Civil Engineering is expected to be from 26-30 for the general category. As we can see in the table below, the cut off keeps changing every year but is in the range of 25-29. As the paper for Civil in GATE was moderate this year, we can expect the cut off to be in the same range.

Mechanical Engineering

GATE cut-off for mechanical paper is increasing over the last 3 years for all categories. Based on the trend we can expect high cut off for reserved category students which can be at par with General Category applicants. The cut-off for Mechanical is expected to be in the range of 32-35 for General and OBC (NCL) and 25-28 for SC/ST/PWD candidates.

Electrical Engineering

The qualifying cut-off for Electrical Engineering fluctuates every year, this is one of the paper in top 5 GATE that has such variation in cut off over the year. Based on the trend we can expect the cut off to increase for GATE 2019. It is expected that GATE 2019 cut off for Electrical Engineering will be in the range 30-32 for General, 27-28 for OBC, and 21-23 for SC/ST/PWD candidates.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

GATE cut-off for Electronics and Communication Engineering has remained the same for the last four years in all the categories. Therefore, we are not expecting any major changes in the cut-off. The qualifying cut off for GATE 2019 is expected to be 24-26 for general, 22-24 for OBC, and 16-17 for SC/ST/PWD candidates.

Qualifying & Admission GATE cut off

Aspirants who score more than GATE qualifying cut off for their subject will be eligible to apply for admission to M.Tech courses at the IITs, NITs, and other engineering institutes. Candidates will also be eligible to apply for different PSUs and companies which recruits personnel based on GATE Score. Qualifying cutoff depends on the following parameters:

  • Performance of candidates in GATE
  • Category of the candidates
  • Previous cutoff trends
  • The difficulty level of the paper
  • Subject

GATE aspirants must keep in mind that qualifying GATE cut off does not guarantee admission to any institute, it is just the minimum cutoff candidates must score in order to qualify GATE.
