SKUAST-J organizes awareness camp on doubling income in agriculture at Reasi

REASI: One-day awareness cum training camp was held today at village Arli in Reasi today under the esteemed guidance of Vice Chancellor Dr. K. S. Risam and Director Research Dr. J. P. Sharma.

The camp was organised by AICRP (Honeybee and Pollinators), SKUAST-Jammu in collaboration with Department of Floriculture, Reasi. More than 50 farmers/rural youths/beekeepers of the area from adjacent areas of village attended the programme.

Dr. Devinder Sharma suggested diversification of agriculture and adoption of more lucrative options like Apiculture (Beekeeping) for enhancing their livelihood. Beekeeping helps in increasing agriculture productivity through pollination, he added.

He emphasized the farmers to adopt beekeeping to increases their income resources and stated that Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most important and suitable beekeeping places for the stationary and migratory beekeeping because of its favorable climatic conditions and diverse natural flora. At the same time, he invited the youth, farmers, and women to take proper training for capacity building by SKUAST University.

Sunil Singh, Landscape officer stated that the farmer faces a lot of problems especially the vagaries of weather, besides fragmented land with poor yield to sustain his family and it is high time that they should switch over to diversified agriculture like floriculture, apiculture and mushroom cultivation etc.

He elaborated upon several farmer oriented schemes of Government and urged the farmers to take the benefit of these schemes. Other officials from line department also spoke about different aspects of bee keeping. On this occasion, beekeeping literature and other accessories were distributed among the participants.
