JU organises Lecture on Women's Day

JAMMU: Centre for Women Studies, University of Jammu today, on 8th March, 2019; organized a lecture on the occasion of International Women's Day. Prof. Suman Jamwal, Director, Centre for Women's Studies, University of Jammu, formally welcomed the audience and introduced the speaker of the day Rahul Jalali, who is considered to be an iconic figure in journalism in India.

He has also been President of Press Club of India three times and also currently holding the position of Chairman of the Federation of Press Clubs of India. He is an established authority on Terrorism. He delivered his lecture on the theme, "Women and Ideology of Terrorism".

Rahul Jalali in his lecture deliberated on the idea of terrorism, role of women in terrorism or whether there is any ideology of terrorism and any role played by women in terrorism.

He traced the role of women in terrorism, its origin and growth, recession, at international and national level. It was during Second World War that women were first seen in war as resistance force and suicide bombers. Women Terrorism was seen in Japan, Ireland, India- LTTE, Afghanistan, Chechnya etc.

Initially when women joined Terrorism, their role was as suicide bombers and not as fighters. Then there was recession in involvement of women in terrorism. But, seeing the present scenario and raise in terrorist activities world over now apprehensions are there that women may be trapped in Terrorist activities for which we must be aware of. In the process of making his point he also dwelt upon the situation in Kashmir.

prof. Shyam Narayan Lal, Head of the Department of History, acted as moderator. Faculty of various departments of University, scholars and students from across the departments of University participated in the lecture. Prominent members of civil society also participated in today's lecture.

Dr. Priyanka Katoch and Saranjeet Kour, faculty Centre for Women's Studies coordinated today's event. The lecture ended with vote of thanks by Prof. Suman Jamwal.
