No night flights operating at Jammu airport; the exit is a total mess in rains

Jammu airport with its 6,500-square-metre (70,000 sq ft) terminal can only handle domestic flights with an annual footfall of around 14.06 lakh passengers and on average 22 daily flights. The recent announcement of operating night flights at the airport brought a lot of excitement among the students, professionals, and patients as they can now avail nighttime facilities. People were too much in awe as the late night flights would add to delight and convenience of passengers traveling through Jammu airport.

The recent up-gradation at Jammu’s Civil Airport includes expansion of terminal building thereby doubling the passenger area and handling capacity, aero-bridges, SHA big enough to handle 7-8 flights per hour with five boarding gates, more check-in counters, escalators, childcare space etc.

"Jammu airport extended its operational timings on January 1 this year but until now, no flights have submitted their schedule", said DK Gautam, Director Jammu airport.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had extended the timings up from 4:30 pm to 9 pm at the airport but the authorities have yet not received any good response from air carriers.

The timings were extended to provide relief to passengers and promote tourism as well. Apart from this, the runway expansion work which is on a war footing is likely to be completed by March 2020. This expansion would help airlines to take off with full load capacity.

Though the recently upgraded facilities do help passengers in their smooth journey yet the exit area at Jammu airport during the rainy season is a nightmare. The AAI has put in efforts for passengers inside the airport but the nullahs running through airport premises are causing inconvenience.

Director Jammu airport said that the concerned department has been contacted time and again regarding this issue but nothing has been done by them till date.

The State administration need to pay serious attention to the drainage system at the airport exit and remove this bottleneck for passengers' convenience.
