Soldier martyred, terrorist killed in Pulwama gunfight: Police

SRINAGAR: An army soldier was martyred and a terrorist was killed in Ratnipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama gunfight on Tuesday morning.

A police spokesperson said based on a “credible input” about the presence of terrorists in Ratnipora area of Pulwama, a cordon and search operation was launched in the intervening night jointly by Police and forces in the area.

He said as the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the terrorists. 

“The fire was retaliated leading to a gunfight,” the spokesperson said.

Police said in the ensuing encounter, one terrorist was killed and the body was retrieved from the site of the encounter. 

“His identity and affiliation are being ascertained.”

In the encounter two security forces personnel also sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated to hospital for medical attention however one of the injured soldier Baljeet Singh succumbed to his injuries.

“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police have registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” he said. 

He added: “Citizens are requested not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any.”
