JU awards PhD to Imran Farooq

JAMMU: The University of Jammu today awarded doctorate degree in Geology to Imran Farooq. He is currently working as Public Relations Officer to the Vice Chancellor and the Vigilance Officer.

Imran pursued his research work under the joint supervision of Prof. G.M Bhatt, Former Controller of Examinations and Rector Bhaderwah Campus and Dr. S. K. Pandita, Professor of Geology and Chairman Campus Cultural Committee, University of Jammu on the topic "Structural Geometry and Geotechnical Aspects of Tectonostratigraphic Units along the Bhadarwah - Bani National Highway-Jammu". Prof. G. M. Bhatt is one of the leading Professors of Geology in India and internationally acclaimed Engineering & Structural Geologist.

When contacted Imran Farooq about the outcomes of his research work, he said that the results of this research would be very beneficial to the road constructing agency along Bhaderwah-Bani area to follow the geo bio-engineering methods for slope stabilization and also said that 26-potential slope failures (Landslides/Rockslides) are likely to occur in near future within this 80 km long stretch of the Bhaderwah-Bani Highway.

He further, said that it would be appropriate for the concerned road constructing agency to avoid mechanized excavation for road widening, to avoid blasting during road construction, to plant shrub (creepers) at vulnerable sites and to channelize the surface runoff and, to avoid percolation of rainwater into top layers soil on the slopes.

It is pertinent to mention herein that Bhaderwah-Bani Highway is a centrally sponsored project and almost 70% work of this prestigious projected has been completed. Once this road gets completed the erstwhile Doda District will get triangular access to the rest of the state and will boost the economy of the region.

Imran Farooq who is also the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the University of Jammu and Incharge of the Coordination Wing. Besides this, he had served as P.R.O of the state of art General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, P.R.O Centre sponsored UDAAN Project and Project Officer of the Internationally sponsored project to the University of Jammu through University Grants Commission (UGC). He was appointed as the Departmental Vigilance Officer in the year 2015 by the Jammu & Kashmir Government to deal with Vigilance related cases in the varsity.
