Stanzin, Manik of J&K in IMF selection camp for Everest

JAMMU: Stanzin Youthog and Manik Slathia of Mountaineering Association of J&K have been selected by Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), New Delhi, the apex body for mountaineering and allied sports in the country, for a selection camp for IMF Everest Expedition-2019.

These two young mountaineers from J&K are among the about 15 mountaineers selected from throughout the country for this selection camp and finally about six mountaineers may be selected for this prestigious expedition. Initially the climbers shall attend a four weeks training around Leh in sub zero temperature and then may attend another such camp elsewhere.

Earlier, Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) organised a small function at Adventure Holidays India to give these climbers a send off. However, only Manik Slathia was present in the function as the other climber Stanzin Youthog had already left for Leh. Most of the members of the Association were present on the occasion to congratulate the mountaineers for their selection in the camp.

Prominent among others present on the occasion included secretary and joint secretary of (MAJK) Ram Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria respectively; Sumit Khajuria, a senior mountaineer, Sonam Sidharth, joint secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Mrigank Kaushal and Lucky Sumbria, both trained mountaineers, Anita Sharma and Ajay Thakur.

Pertinent to mention here that Stanzin Youthog is an accomplished mountaineer of J&K having the distinction of being the first Indian girl along with two others to scale Shivling peak, technically a very difficult peak. She has also scaled and participated in many other expeditions to formidable peaks. She is a constable in Police department and is a good boxer also.

On the other hand Manik Slathia is a fast upcoming mountaineer who has successfully completed all his mountaineering courses and has scaled Matho Kangri, Stok Kangri and Kolhai peak in J&K and Dharamsura in Himachal Pradesh in an Alpine camp organized by Indian Mountaineering Foundation.
