Sami Ara | Journey from air hostess to first lady pilot commander from J&K

SRINAGAR: Breaking all the stereotypes, Captain Sami Ara has made her way to prominence. She has become the Jammu and Kashmir's first commercial pilot from northern Kashmir's Sumbal tehsil in Bandipora district. She hails from a rural background but has carved her niche for herself at national level ages ago but her inspirational untold story needs to be told.

She was born to Ghulam Mohiuddin and Mukhta Begum. Since both her parents were educated government employees. Sami found an educated environment to begin her journey. She completed her primary education from primary school Sumbal. Sami went to school in days when girls were told to learn household chores and help their mothers at home. She brilliantly passed her matriculation examination and joined M L Higher Secondary School, Hajin for further studies.

Her friends remember Sami as teachers' favorite student and an all-rounder. Though her dream of becoming a doctor didn't come to fruition yet she never lost hope or stopped facing challenges.

She pursued her B.Sc degree and became first female science graduate from Sumbal area. After her graduation, she wanted to pursue master's degree but later opted for a private job at a meager salary.

Her passion to prove mettle didn't shatter so after a few months, she got selected for the job of air hostess. The job boosted her confidence and she started preparing for her career in aviation. Years of hard work led her to commercial pilot training in Texas USA. She completed her training in a record period of three months. She is now a licensed commercial pilot who never gave up on her dreams.

Sami is married to a commercial pilot from Madhya Pradesh and is blessed with two cute sons. She gives the credit of her success to her mother and her own hard work, Sami believes willpower can do miracles.

She has earned enough name, fame and wealth with hard work and now she sensitize young people particularly girls about the career options in aviation and other sectors.

As her success story became viral in Kashmir valley, she has been called by educational institutions, colleges and universities to interact with students. Though her plans never worked out in the beginning but she made sure to put in hard work for getting to pinnacle of her career. She has become an inspiration for one and all.
