Jammu hosts maiden Rs 20 lakh Chess event from December 8

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir shall be hosting highest ever Rs 20 lakh prize money cheePrize money Open Senior National Chess Championship at Jammu from December eight at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust in the outskirts of the city, here.

The event is hosted by the All J&K Chess Association (AJKCA) under the aegis of All India Chess Federation (AICF).

Around 40 titled players-Grand Masters and International Masters have confirmed their entries with the AJKCA. The total participation shall be around 220, including 170 players representing 36 affiliated units of the All India Chess Federation (AICF).

This was disclosed by president of the AJKCA, Atul Kumar Gupta in a media interaction held here today.

The event shall start with first round of the competition on December eight, followed by the FIDE Law of Chess under Swiss system wherein total 13 rounds will be played.

"The total prize fund for top 10 players will be Rs 20 lakh with first prize being Rs four lakh.

The second and third position holders shall get Rs three and Rs two lakh prize money respectively. Similarly, those fifth position holder shall get Rs 1.5 lakh, followed by the Rs one lakh each for sixth, seventh and eight place," disclosed Atul Kumar.

"Such an event certainly help the young and upcoming talent of the state get much needed exposure of looking at the top rank players during the week-long competition. The J&K, beign the host state, has got the opportunity to field eight players in this event with wild card entry only for players with rating of more than 2000," further said the AJKCA president.

Also present at the media interaction were office bearers of the host Association including Baldev Raj, Taranvir Singh, Kuljeet Jamwal, Raj Kumar, Vikas Nanda and Dr A S Bhatia.
