Indian Linux Users Group organises seminar on FOSS

JAMMU: Indian Linux Users Group- Jammu conducted a seminar on FOSS at Department of Computer Science & IT, University of Jammu. Research scholars from all the departments of the University attended the seminar.

Amit Sharma, Assistant Professor, Kathua Campus, University of Jammu and Co-Founder of Indian Linux Users Group - Jammu introduced the scholars with the concept of Free /Open Source Software (FOSS) and its applications in higher education sector as a crucial component of 17 by 17 Digital Initiatives proposed by the Ministry of HRD.

Starting with the evolution of FOSS the main focus of the seminar was to cultivate the culture of open source, to differentiate between proprietary and open source software, to made audience aware of various Operating Systems based on FOSS, etc. He also made scholars familiar with different application software available freely and openly and can be used for research purposes like data collection, cleaning, analysis and visualization. In the end, the resource person also responded to the queries and problems researchers may face while using these software.

Earlier, Prof Lalit Sen Sharma, HoD, Department of Computer Science and IT, University of Jammu inaugurated the seminar and also encouraged the participants to prefer open source softwares instead of proprietary softwares.

Concluding remarks were given by Prof Vinod Sharma who is also the Chief-Patron of Indian Linux Users Group - Jammu. Among those who were present were Prof Pawnesh Abrol, Dr Sunil Bhougal, Riti Prakash Singh Katal (Co-ordinator ILUGJ), Vinay Salgotra (Content Manager ILUGJ), Abhimanu Sehgal and Navdeep Mathur.
