MIER College organises extension lecture

JAMMU: The Centre for Educational Research at MIER College of Education organized an extension lecture on the theme "Humanization of Teaching in India". The resource person was Dr. Ritu Bakshi, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, Central University of Jammu.

Dr. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal MIER College chaired the session. Dr. N.R Sharma, Dean Academics, Dr. H.R Shan, Controller Examination, Dr. Mool Raj Sharma, Deputy HoD PG Department and Dr. Nishta Rana, Head CER, along with the faculty and students of the PG Department attended the extension lecture.

Dr. Nishta Rana, Head CER introduced resource person as an expert in the field of Teacher Education and Sociology. She described Dr. Bakshi as a distinguished researcher and a teacher educator, who has presented and published papers both at the national and international level.

Dr. Bakshi opened her deliberations highlighting the historical roots of dehumanization of education in India. She said, "treating a human being as the highest value of social existence, has become an essential component in the development of different potentials of a student in education."

Dr. Bakshi discussed 3D's of India namely demographic dividend, democratic dividend and diversity dividend which places India in a unique position in humanizing education. She said, "As teachers, we need to touch the heart of the students in addition to providing information and in making teaching-learning a two-way process. Teachers' prior knowledge and life experiences do influence the way they perceive the nature of learning and their students."

She deliberated on different strategies and principles of humanizing teaching such as student empowerment, students' sociocultural resources, discourse style, challenging inequity in education etc. She provided many examples from day-to-day life and shared her experiences in the field.

The guest lecture was followed by an interaction session.

Dr. N. R. Sharma, in his presidential address, said that education system in India is at a crossroads, as it faces many challenges in humanizing education. The teacher acts as an important medium in humanizing education, however, teacher is a part of and influenced by the values of the society. He said there is an urgent need to preserve the core social values in humanizing education.

Dr. Mool Raj Sharma, Deputy HoD PG Department presented a formal Vote of Thanks to the distinguished speaker and the audience.
