Industrial visit organised for MBA (International Business) students

JAMMU: International Centre for Cross-Cultural Research and Human Resource Management (ICccR & HRM), University of Jammu organised an industrial visit of MBA (International Business) Semester 1st students to Shalimar Carpets Pvt. Ltd, SIDCO Complex, Jammu.

The industrial visit was aimed to address the gaps that students witness in terms of understanding industrial functioning under practical scenarios. For students pursuing professional education industrial visit particularly to the core manufacturing facilities help them gain hands-on experience of how industry operations are executed by bridging the gap between theoretical training and practical learning in a real-life environment.

In alignment with the curriculum of MBA (International Business), that endorses industrial exposure of students as a core pedagogical tool, the Industry visit provided an opportunity for active/interactive learning for the students to better correlate academic learning with the overall organizational functioning.

Handicrafts being one of the thrust areas of economic importance in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and Shalimar Carpets Industries headed by Rakesh Bhatt, holds a rich history of craftsmanship with global outreach. The unit located in Jammu exports, supplies and create finest quality Tufted Wall to Wall, Hand Woven, Industrial Carpets Runners and Hand Tufted Rugs. Nationally, the sister concern M/s Chinar International based in Delhi is a government recognized export house dealing exclusively in handmade carpets and selling it all across the globe.

Further, in conversation with Rakesh Bhatt, Managing Director, Shalimar Carpets Pvt. Ltd, spoke about the challenges faced by the industry in terms of skilled manpower and quality designers that can carve designs for global customers and institutional clientele. He stressed upon bridging the skill gap through academic interventions and the activities like visits and internships in local industrial setups are important for students.

He stressed the need for development of practical ideation and problem solving by relating theoretical knowledge to practical aspects of the studied courses, in terms of industrial unit operations, process and design concepts, and impact of its enterprises' job employability in particular and society as whole.

The industrial experts Ramesh Thakur, Production Incharge and Nisha Sumjotra, Human Resource Manager, Shalimar Carpets Pvt. Ltd enlightened students about the quality standards and competitive pricing that need to be maintained for being globally viable and economically relevant. To attain quality, adherence to the international norms of quality and following total quality management for manufacturing of carpets is of great importance.

They deliberated that for quality maintenance the raw materials are procured from the reputed suppliers of the country and from foreign destinations as well. Quoting supply chain management as a critical concern for the industry, and for attainment of lean supply chain from designing, weaving to finishing and each stage of the product development is subject to various quality tests and inspections.

The students also toured the premises of Shalimar Carpets Pvt. Ltd that comprises of quality sections, designing areas, spindles section, assembly line working and automation section wherein the final products are being manufactured and sent for packaging and warehousing. The students were also deliberated on concepts such as supply chain management, logistics management, design creations and safety engineering.

Professor Deepak Raj Gupta, Director, ICccR & HRM, expressed satisfaction and desire to translate such like academia-industry interfaces into a permanent form of International Business pedagogy so that students can relate their academic knowledge with corporate functioning, which further enables them to identify the business domains that can be pursued as full time careers.
