Army Commander for tight vigil on LoC

SRINAGAR: Northern Army Commander Lt General Ranbir Singh has asked the troops deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) to maintain tight vigil and thwart infiltration of militants from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The Army Commander on Friday visited forward areas of North Kashmir to review prevailing security situation on the LoC. He visited Uri along the LoC and Baramulla where he was briefed about the preparedness of the troops to foil any attempts of infiltration from PoK.

The Army Commander was told that the troops along the LoC are alert and there is round the clock vigil so that the infiltration of militants into Valley is prevented. He was told that besides counter infiltration fence that is major obstacle for infiltration, the troops are patrolling along the fence to prevent infiltration.

This year despite tight vigil along the LoC, 59 militants managed to infiltrate into Kashmir from PoK. The troops have been told by the Commander to plug any gaps in the counter-infiltration grid.

General Singh told the Commanders on the ground that further security measures should be put in place so that the infiltrators are tackled and neutralized in 5 kilometer belt along the LoC and they are prevented entering the hinterland.

Srinagar based Defence spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said: "Accompanied by the Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen AK Bhatt, the Army Commander visited the frontier district of Uri and Baramulla, wherein he was briefed on the Counter Infiltration Grid and operational preparedness of the formations."

"The Army Commander was appreciative of the measures and Standard Operating Procedures instituted by the units and formations to meet the challenges posed by the inimical elements", the spokesman said.

Colonel Kalia said: "During his interaction with the soldiers on ground, the Commander lauded them for their high level of morale and round the clock vigil which they maintain to thwart infiltration bids by the terrorists."

"The Army Commander exhorted them to continue to work with same zeal and dedication to defeat enemy's hostile designs so as to maintain a safe, secure and peaceful environment for the people of Kashmir", the spokesman added.
